Engineering Technician

Summary About the Position: Fort Carson, known as the "Mountain Post," is a premier U.S. Army installation located just south of Colorado Springs, Colorado, primarily within El Paso County. Spanning roughly 140,000 acres (with training access extending to the 235,000-acre Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site), it is highly regarded for its high-altitude, mountainous training environment. Duties

• Designs, plans, and estimates complete civil engineering projects, for execution by contract, or Troop Construction, which range from single-scope projects of limited size to larger projects which impact on other specialties.
• Modifies or adapts standard guides, techniques and procedures to resolve problems.
• Provides statistical/narrative analysis on the most economical and feasible type of construction, types of materials, location, etc.
• Develops complete working drawings and specifications according to established standards.
• Reviews and monitors assigned projects through all stages of development.
• Coordinates civil engineering projects and studies assigned to A-E firms, the Corps of Engineers, or other design service and construction activities, from assignment of the project to acceptance of construction.
• Develops project scope or work criteria and presents data to design agency to ensure designer has complete understanding of project scope.
• Prepares cost estimates of the hours and miscellaneous expenses the design firm should reasonably use to properly complete the project.
• Coordinates the review to be conducted by engineers, architects and other engineers.
• Researches and provides solutions for technical work requests submitted by others regarding civil engineering problems by striving to ensure compliance with existing systems and optimum maintainability and efficiency.
• Keeps current with industry practices and maintains a working knowledge of Fort Carson's infrastructure assets and systems. Specialized Experience: In-Service Applicants: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with tasks such as cost estimating, cost breakdown, or working with contractors/suppliers on project completion. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). Or Specialized Experience: Other Applicants: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with tasks such as cost estimating, cost breakdown, or working with contractors/suppliers on project completion; and writing, administering, or enforcing contracts. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10). Time in Grade Requirement: In-Service Applicants: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the second lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
