Job Title: Detention Center Maintenance Technician II Department: General Services External Hiring Range: $22.51 - $27.09 Compensation Grade: 2005 Posted Internally and Externally Our General Services Department is seeking a Maintenance Technician II to join our dynamic team at the Detention Center. This position offers a variety of daily responsibilities, making each day unique and providing opportunities to develop and apply a wide range of maintenance skills. The ideal candidate is a team player with strong communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills who can adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. This mid-level position is well suited for individuals with a background in construction, building maintenance, or facility maintenance who enjoy hands-on work and take pride in keeping facilities safe and operational. This is an essential position that requires participation in an on-call rotation and a commitment to supporting the critical operations of the Detention Center. Purpose of the Position: The purpose of this position is to be responsible for performing advanced level skilled work in the maintenance and repair of County buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities. Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High school diploma or GED, and a minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in the aspect of trades, such as HVAC, electric, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, or painting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be 18 years of age or older. License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Physical Requirements: Works in various environments which may include temperature variations. Position requires pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, squatting, and bending on a routine basis. May work in tight spaces occasionally and may include extended period of times in prone or non-standing/non-sitting position. May be required to lift objects of 20 pounds to 50 pounds on a routine basis; Up to 100 pounds occasionally. Essential Functions of the position:

  • Maintain, replace, and repair County buildings, facilities and grounds including, but not limited to, HVAC, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, painting, welding, and light electrical work.
  • Perform general carpentry work as part of construction, remodel, repair or alteration of floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, and screens.
  • Maintain heating and cooling systems, alarm systems, water systems and remove/replace doors.
  • Review work orders, construction plans, specifications, and technical instructions.
  • Applies knowledge of safety procedures when operating tools and working in machinery and moving mechanical parts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the procedures, materials, and equipment related to plumbing, electrical, heating and air conditioning, fire alarms, carpentry, and painting trades.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the maintenance trades involved in the work.
  • Knowledge of the applicable codes and regulations related to the maintenance work performed.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools necessary in performing mechanical, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and allied building repair, and maintenance work.
  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of records, receipts, technical diagrams, blueprints, specifications, and work orders.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment including mechanics tools, carpentry tools, electrical tools, plumbing tools, welding equipment, painting equipment, and common machine shop equipment.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages and understand and apply the theories of algebra.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or objects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently use mechanical and engineering terminology to communicate.
  • Maintain knowledge of the agency organizational rules, policies, procedures, services, and mission.
