Scheduled Weekly Hours: 0.01 Work Shift: Days/Afternoons (United States of America) Primary Function/General Purpose of Position The RN Wound Ostomy Inpatient provides specialized nursing care to patients with acute and chronic wounds, ostomies, fistulas, pressure injuries, skin integrity concerns, and continence-related conditions. This role serves as a clinical expert and consultant for inpatient wound and ostomy management, conducting comprehensive assessments, developing evidence-based plans of care, coordinating interdisciplinary treatment, and providing patient, family, and staff education to optimize clinical outcomes. The RN Wound Ostomy Inpatient promotes best practices in wound prevention, wound healing, ostomy management, and skin care while supporting quality improvement initiatives and advancing nursing excellence across the hospital. Essential Job Functions

  • Performs comprehensive wound, ostomy, continence, and skin assessments, including identification, staging, measurement, documentation, and ongoing evaluation of patient conditions.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates individualized plans of care utilizing evidence-based wound and ostomy practices.
  • Serves as an inpatient consultant and clinical resource for physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members regarding wound, ostomy, and skin management.
  • Assesses, photographs, stages, and measures wounds in accordance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and professional standards.
  • Collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary care teams to develop treatment recommendations and facilitate continuity of care throughout hospitalization and discharge planning.
  • Provides patient, family, and caregiver education related to wound prevention, wound treatment, ostomy management, continence care, and self-care strategies.
  • Evaluates patient responses to treatment interventions and modifies plans of care as appropriate to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Coordinates inpatient wound and ostomy consultations and participates in multidisciplinary rounds, care conferences, and discharge planning activities.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and monitoring of clinical protocols, quality initiatives, and performance improvement activities related to wound and ostomy care.
  • Supports pressure injury prevention initiatives and promotes best practices in skin integrity management throughout the hospital.
  • Serves as a clinical educator by providing ongoing education, mentoring, and competency support to nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and compliant documentation that supports clinical outcomes, quality measures, and reimbursement requirements.
  • Administers medications and treatments in accordance with State Nurse Practice Acts, organizational policies, and evidence-based standards.   • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice or compact RN license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (required prior to independent patient care). Preferred
  • Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN) from the Wond, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB).
  • Certified Ostomy Care Nurse (COCN) from the Wond, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB).
  • Certified Continence Care Nurse (CCCN) from the Wond, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB).
  • Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON) from the Wond, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB).
  • Certified Wound Specialist (CWS) from the American Board of Wound Management. Required Within Two Years of Hire
  • Ostomy & Wound Care Certification (WOCN or equivalent approved certification). Education
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (required)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) (preferred)
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) (preferred) Work Experience Required
  • Two years experience as a Registered Nurse in acute care.
  • Recent experience in wound care, ostomy care, medical-surgical nursing, critical care, rehabilitation, home health, or related specialty. Preferred
  • Two (2) years of wound and ostomy nursing experience.
  • Experience providing inpatient wound consultation services.
  • Experience with advanced wound therapies and pressure injury prevention programs.
  • Experience with negative pressure wound therapy, compression therapy, skin substitutes, and ostomy product management.
