Summary This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services, National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. What You'll Be Doing Day to Day

As an Microbiologist , you will use your knowledge and experience to optimize business results and customer experience by: Performing microbiology and related fields support work in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous microorganisms and biological agents. Calibrating and operating laboratory instruments that are necessary to perform specialized tests, analyses and other standard procedures in conducting experiments and studies. Analyzing laboratory data, evaluate experimental findings, and repeat or modify experiments when necessary to resolve discrepancies or validate results. Ensuring proper collection of data and conduct experiments and studies, making adjustments in methods and procedures as appropriate during the course of the studies or experiments. Preparing scientific reports, technical documentation, and laboratory records to support research findings, surveillance activities, and public health decision-making. Qualifications

What We Are Looking for

Basic Qualifications: You must possess one of the following: A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Minimum Qualifications: You must have one-year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service performing at least ALL of the following: Conducting laboratory studies focused on vector-borne diseases, with emphasis on pathogens transmitted by arthropod (ticks, fleas and insect) vectors. Performing scientific testing and laboratory analyses to detect and identify infectious microorganisms associated with vector-borne diseases. Applying laboratory techniques and research methods to support the detection, identification, and study of infectious agents transmitted by arthropod (ticks, fleas and insect) vectors. OR Have 2 years of progressively higher-level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR Have a combination of education and specialized experience that together meets 100% of the qualification requirement for this position. Documenting experience:
