The Infra / DevOps Engineer is a new role supporting the ongoing modernisation and development of the company’s application infrastructure. The role will work across Linux, PostgreSQL, Java application platforms and CI/CD, helping to deliver platform upgrades, security improvements, disaster recovery capability and reliable deployment processes. Working closely with the Development and wider Infrastructure teams, the engineer will also provide hands-on troubleshooting and technical engineering support across a varied programme of business and technology projects over the coming years. More about the role:
- Take an active role in major-version upgrades and ongoing maintenance of PostgreSQL database platforms, including compatibility testing and query/performance validation.
- Patch, upgrade and maintain Debian/Linux operating systems across the application estate, including security hardening and implementation of infrastructure security improvements.
- Build and test disaster recovery solutions for key business systems, including failover procedures and periodic DR testing.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, working with the Infrastructure and Development teams to support reliable and repeatable deployment of applications and infrastructure.
- Administer, maintain and tune Apache Tomcat application servers supporting the department’s bespoke Java application stack.
- Provide hands-on Linux systems administration, including monitoring, capacity planning, backups and incident response.
- Troubleshoot production issues spanning operating system, database and application layers, working closely with the Development team and wider DevOps function.
- Provide ongoing support for infrastructure engineering, maintenance and troubleshooting to support the department’s application estate and project pipeline.
- Contribute infrastructure expertise to new project environments, deployments and technology initiatives as they arise.
- Maintain appropriate technical documentation and operational records for systems, infrastructure changes and support activities.
- Contribute to the continual improvement of infrastructure, deployment and operational processes, helping to improve reliability, security and control.
- Support the department's compliance with ISO 27001 (Information Security), ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) requirements relevant to infrastructure and DevOps activities. About you
- Proven hands-on experience as a Linux Systems Administrator, Infrastructure Engineer, or similar role, ideally with Debian/Ubuntu environments.
- Practical experience administering PostgreSQL, including major-version upgrades.
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, for example with Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or equivalent.
- Experience administering Apache Tomcat or similar Java application servers.
- Experience building and testing disaster recovery solutions.
- Strong troubleshooting skills spanning operating system, database, and application layers.
- Familiarity with security hardening, access controls, system auditing and logging.
- Scripting ability, for example Bash or Python, for automating routine administration tasks would be an advantage.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work independently while coordinating with Development and wider Infrastructure teams.
- Awareness of, or practical experience working within, ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management system frameworks (or equivalent) is desirable. GDP, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Responsibilities

- Reporting deviations, incidents, non-conformances, environmental incidents and other concerns promptly to their manager or the appropriate responsible person.
- Supporting the effective operation and continual improvement of company processes.
- Taking appropriate action to prevent errors, product quality issues, environmental impacts and risks within their area of responsibility.
- Cooperating with internal and external audits and providing accurate information and evidence when requested.
- Understanding how their activities contribute to product quality, customer satisfaction, regulatory compliance, environmental performance and the achievement of company objectives.
