Description The Outreach Manager leads the Saint Louis Science Center’s pre K-12 STEM outreach efforts, bringing hands-on, curiosity-driven science learning into schools and communities throughout the St. Louis region. The Outreach Manager balances strategic planning with on-the-ground execution. The position oversees educational staff, leads volunteer support, and requires strong partnership-building skills and the ability to translate Science Center content into accessible, culturally responsive experiences. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- In conjunction with the Associate Director of Program Content Development, develop and implement an annual K-12 outreach strategy aligned with Science Center priorities, with particular emphasis on community alignment, equity, and access.
- Ensure programs are age-appropriate, culturally responsive, accessible, and aligned with Missouri science curriculum standards and informal learning best practices.
- Identify priority audiences and geographic areas, with intentional focus on K-12 communities historically underserved by STEM opportunities.
- Collaborate with Gallery teams to adapt Science Center content for off-site, in-classroom delivery.
- Oversee day-to-day execution of outreach programs, ensuring quality, consistency, and alignment with mission and values.
- Build and sustain strong relationships with schoolteachers, administrators, and outreach partners, serving as the primary point of contact to ensure clear communication and mutual value.
- Work closely with school systems to propose, develop, and deliver STEM content aligning with student needs.
- Collaborate with Institutional Advancement on sponsorships and grant-funded outreach initiatives.
- Work with Marketing and Communications to promote outreach programs and reach priority audiences.
- Develop clear, compelling program descriptions and participant communications.
- Partner with the Research and Evaluation team to track and report progress toward an annual participation goal of more than 50,000 students, families, and community members, and support the Associate Director in developing regular reports for leadership and partners.
- Document lessons learned and best practices to strengthen future outreach efforts.
- Coordinate outreach equipment, program materials, and staff time contributed by other departments in support of outreach delivery.
- Manage outreach program expenses within approved budget, including materials, equipment, and staffing costs.
- Hire, train, and support the scheduling of Outreach Team members, which may include a combination of part-time and full-time staff depending on program needs, as well as volunteer support.
- Travel to school sites throughout the St. Louis region to support outreach delivery, with mileage and transportation reimbursed in accordance with Science Center policy.
- Support colleagues across the Community Engagement Division as needed, contributing to shared divisional goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned, reflecting the evolving needs of the department and the Science Center’s mission.
- Expected to work occasional evenings and weekends. Physical Demands
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without accommodation.
- May be required to walk and stand in all areas of the Science Center or offsite school facilities.
- Ability to work in loud and/or crowded environments.
- Must have consistent access to reliable transportation to travel to school sites and transport program materials and equipment. Schedule
- Monday through Friday, with occasional nights and/or weekends. Requirements Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in education, science, museum studies, nonprofit management, or equivalent experience.
- 5–7 years of progressive experience in community outreach, education, or informal learning.
- Experience managing multiple programs with measurable outcomes.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with databases, registration systems, and standard office software.
- Experience in a science center, museum, or cultural institution, preferred.
- Knowledge of Missouri education standards and informal learning frameworks, preferred.
- Experience supervising, training, and managing part-time and/or full-time staff and volunteers.
