Safety and Occupational Health Manager

Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in National Museum of Asian Art (NMAA). The National Museum of Asian Art stewards the worlds most important collections of Asian Art, with works dating from antiquity to present including an unparralled collection of 19th and 20th century American Art. Duties The Safety and Occupational Health Manager is responsible for the development, implementation, management of comprehensive health, safety and environmental management programs. The Safety and Occupational Health Manager serves as a primary advisor to Smithsonian leadership, staff and provides technical assistance to building management and security staff as needed. In this position, you will: Conduct workplace inspections and assessments, identifies hazards, documents findings and recommendations; and briefs leadership on risks, resource needs, and corrective action status. Support accident prevention by reviewing trends, engaging staff, and coordinating with supervisors and safety committees; investigates incidents and near-misses; documents findings; and recommends corrective and preventive actions. Develop, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate safety, occupational health, and environmental training for employees and supervisors. Tracks training completion and certification records and follows up with employees and supervisors to support compliance. Advise on hazardous materials and waste requirements; coordinates with OSHEM and unit leadership on complex issues Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Education Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. (An unofficial transcript must be submitted) OR Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Managing safety or occupational health program elements. Developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management. Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements. Developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards. Developing or implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses. Analyzing or evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards. Designing or modifying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems to control or eliminate hazards. Inspecting or surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards. Training of workers, supervisors, managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects. Work in occupational fields such as industrial hygienist, safety engineer, fire prevention engineer, health physicist, and occupational health nurse. OR Certificates Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or similar certification that included successful completion of a written examination meets the requirements for GS-5. Applicants may also qualify for higher grade levels based on their education and/or experience. AND In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, candidates must also meet the specialized experience requirements as follows: GS-12 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience conducting safety inspections or compliance assessments; identifying hazards and recommending corrective actions; supporting accident investigations; and coordinating with stakeholders to support safety compliance.
