As a Lab Technician II, you’ll play an important role in the laboratory process by ensuring patient specimens and information are accurately received, documented, processed, and prepared for analysis. This role is a great steppingstone for caregivers interested in exploring future opportunities within the laboratory and identifying areas that align with their skills and career goals. Day to day, you’ll spend much of your time in a clean, desk-based environment processing patient information in Epic and receiving specimens and other materials. Responsibilities include accessioning specimens into the laboratory information system, retrieving, sorting, tracking and delivering specimens, verifying documentation, investigating specimen issues, and preparing specimens for analysis. You’ll also perform manual processing such as centrifuging and aliquoting, maintain patient and specimen tracking information, complete preventive maintenance and records, place work orders, and provide training or mentoring to new hires, students and clinical learners as assigned. Success in this role requires reliability, attention to detail, a positive and collaborative approach, and the ability to multitask while responding well to feedback. Your work directly supports patient care by helping ensure specimens are accurately processed and ready for testing, contributing to timely diagnoses and important treatment decisions for patients with a wide range of health needs. A caregiver in this position works days from 8:30AM – 5:00PM. A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Receive and accession laboratory specimens into the LIS.
  • Retrieve, sort, track and deliver specimens.
  • Perform specimen investigation procedures to resolve lab specimen issues or problems.
  • Verify accurate documentation relative to specimen processing.
  • Maintain patient, specimen and tracking data using the laboratory computer system, tracking and software/devices.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis and accept or reject specimens.
  • Perform manual processing (centrifuge, aliquoting and routine maintenance). Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of lab experience Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
  • Associate's degree in science (will substitute the required experience) Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perform specimen handling techniques and take measurements.
  • Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Ability to move throughout the department and hospital system.
  • Handles and transports biohazardous materials and potential carcinogens.
  • Ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation, and tones.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. Personal Protective Equipment:
