Description Position Title: Accountant FLSA Classification: Exempt

  • Administrative Reports To: Controller Positions Supervised: Assigned Accounting Staff POSITION OVERVIEW: The accountant coordinates and performs accounting, reporting, reconciliation, cash-management, and financial-control activities. The position collaborates with accounting staff, department leaders, grant and property functions, and the Controller to ensure accurate records, timely reporting, and effective financial operations.

Essential Position

RESPONSIBILITIES: Core Job Functions & Essential Tasks · Assists with the preparation of financial statements, financial reports, special analyses, and information reports for review with department leaders. · Oversees accounts payable processing, general-ledger activity, account maintenance, and related accounting data entry. · Completes monthly bank reconciliations and reconciles balance-sheet accounts and subsidiary records. · Monitors daily cash requirements and supports informed financial decision-making. Administrative & Operational Support · Maintains accounting-related software and supporting systems, including mileage, donor, purchasing-card, and other assigned platforms. · Maintains appropriate accounting controls, records, procedures, and safeguards. · Assists with updating the accounting policy manual annually and develops step-by-step job aids for assigned functions. · Maintains organized, accurate, and audit-ready accounting records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Requests, Service & Responsiveness · Collaborates with accounting staff and department leaders to resolve financial questions, obtain supporting information, and complete reporting requirements. · Provides timely, accurate, and professional financial information while maintaining confidentiality and appropriate internal controls. Projects & Special Assignments · Assists with preparation of supporting workpapers for the annual audit and nonprofit tax return. · Works with the Controller to analyze financial statements and recommend improvements. · Supports grant and HUD-property financial compliance, including grant reporting, rental records, and collections. · Participates in financial-system improvements, special analyses, and other accounting projects as assigned. Departmental & Organizational Support · Supports payroll functions affecting accounting, including reconciliation of payroll-related general-ledger accounts. · Collaborates with accounting staff to ensure accurate, timely, and consistent completion of department responsibilities. · Supports MHA’s mission through financial stewardship, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. · Completes other duties and special assignments as requested by the Controller. Requirements POSITION REQUIREMENTS: · Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field required; equivalent relevant education and progressively responsible experience may be considered. · Progressively responsible accounting experience involving general ledger, reconciliations, audit support, and internal controls. · Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and applicable nonprofit and grant reporting requirements. · Proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Excel; ability to learn and maintain supporting financial software and information systems. · Strong analytical, reconciliation, documentation, problem-solving, organization, communication, and time-management skills. · Ability to manage competing deadlines, exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and produce accurate work with limited supervision. · Experience coordinating accounting staff or overseeing accounts-receivable, accounts-payable, payroll, or related functions preferred. Driver Level: Level 2 – Routine driving for work, errands, or transporting others; may be infrequent or on an irregular basis. Personal insurance and valid driver’s license required. Position Flexibility: Onsite (No Remote Work): This is an onsite position with no regular remote work option. If role allows, limited flexibility for remote work may be granted in the event of office closures due to inclement weather; otherwise, remote work is not available. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: · Sitting, viewing a computer monitor, data entry, keyboarding, and use of standard office equipment for extended periods of time. · Occasional standing, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting or carrying office materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. · Routine driving, errands, and travel to agency or community locations as required.
