Job Summary Under direct supervision of a pharmacist and in accordance with specific and detailed instructions assist in the packaging, manufacturing, distribution of drugs and supplies. Performs various nonjudgemental functions in all areas of the department including, ambulatory and inpatient drug distribution, sterile product preparation, manufacturing and packaging as well as provision of ambulatory services. Responsible for the procurement of inventory and inventory control. Performs other related duties and utilized automated and computerized technology as required. Essential Functions
• Fills unit dose medication cassettes utilizing appropriate fill lists, accurate daily census reports. Records doses used and prepares cassettes for pharmacist verification *Cassettes and medication prepared with zero error on a timely basis in accordance with medical center guidelines and procedures
• Updates and backfills patient medication cassettes using census and supplemental fill lists *Census and supplemental fill lists are printed and medication cassettes are updated accurately with zero error
• Cassettes are labeled neatly and accurately with patient name *Medication cassettes are labeled accurately with zero error
• Exchanges medication cassettes according to a predetermined procedure and schedule *Medication cassettes delivered to correct unit, on time and exchanged correctly. Bulk medications are removed from used patient bins and are placed in the current bin.
• Returns all unused medications back to stock *Cassette filling area neat and clean with all re-suable medications returned to stock. Expired or unusable mediations placed in designated area.
• Ensures appropriate cassette floor stock is correct, replrnished, not overfilled, meets par level and expired medications removed *Floor stock medications replenished, meet par levels, no expired medications found.
• Credits returned IVs and cassette medications to appropriate patient account and in a timely fashion *Dose reconciliation performed daily with zero error
• Maintains an inventory of drugs and supplies in assigned work area, ensuring proper security , storage and dating *Work area adequately stocked. Prepares stock list as needed. No excessive stock or outdated medication.
• Prepares orders to restock toe production/sterile products areas with drugs, solutions and IV manufacturing equipment *Adequate stocking for optimal work performance
• Decrements and documents movements of IV drugs from freezer and labels drugs with appropriate expiration date *Accurate removal and labeling of the IV medications with zero error
• Prepares doses of sterile IV medication, parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy products using aseptic techniques and labels correctly *Preparations are 100% accurate and sterile. Labels prepared with zero error
• Completes production sheets and manufacturing records for IV drugs and medications prepared in the bulk production/manufacturing area *Production sheets and manufacturing records are completed 100% with all required information
• Refills and documents movements of CAC, Ambulatory Emergency, Transport and RSI kits. Handle delivery of CAC kits throughout main hospital facility *Completes record keeping of location of kit movement and refills kits with zero error. Responds to calls for emergency boxes expeditiously
• Sorting, recording and proper disposal of expired/contaminated drugs as well as recycling those preparations returned to pharmacy *Proper handling and disposal of medications prepared in the bulk compounding area and proper reuse of still useful and efficacious medications
• Bulk manufacturing and packaging of unit dose liquid and solid dosage forms as well as preparing controlled drugs for dispensing and assisting the pharmacist in compounding preparations *Accurate preparation of unit dose medications and compounded preparations with zero error
• Assists with filling ambulatory prescriptions *Removes medication from shelf to fill prescription and adheres to policy and procedure with zero error
• Assists pharmacist with collecting pertinent patient information and enters into the ambulatory pharmacy computer *Information collected and entered into the ambulatory pharmacy computer is 100% accurate
• Submits claims and verifies payment with PBMs *Submission forms are 100% accurate and complete. Reviews reimbursement records for correctness
• Interacts with patient regarding prescription orders *Collects accurate patient information, courteous to all patients, uses discretion and ensures patient confidentiality
• Files prescription records according to regulation and policy and procedure *Prescriptions are filed in accordance with policy and procedure
• Performs patient care area inspections as assigned *Performs routine inspections
• Records daily workload statistics such as number IV and oral pediatric syringes prepared *Workload statistics are recorded accurately on the appropriate log sheet every day
• Assists customers at doors/window *Customer service provided in a timely and courteous manner
• Receives drugs and supplies, verifies quantity received, indicates price when necessary and places drugs and supplies in appropriate area of pharmacy. Stock is rotated when appropriate *Drugs and supplies received and accounted for on invoice. Informs supervisor of shortages and/or drugs not shipped. Prices are marked correctly on medication containers, and order is placed in stock correctly
• Checks pharmacy inventory routinely for outdated and other unusable medications. Arranges that replacemtns are received *No outdated or unusable inventory found in the pharmacy
• Procures medications and supplies from vendors utilizing automated technology as needed and ensures that credits are received *Adequate supply of medication is available at all times
• Maintains records of floor stock transactions and charging *Ensures that unit is charged for floor. stock medications inventory control computer system
• Ensures that appropriate floor stock medications are in appropriate supply unit and in other areas of the hospital where floor stock medications are approved *No excess floor stock medications on units
• Maintains an inventory of drugs and supplies in assigned work area, ensuring proper security, storage and dating *Work area adequately stocked with no outdated medication.
• Maintains work area and entire pharmacy in clean and orderly condition *Pharmacy work areas kept clean at all times
• Answers telephone politely and professionally *Picks up phone quickly, states name and location when telephone is answered. Helpful to caller, forward call to pharmacist when necessary.
• Assists with filling of labels and orders as received at the door/window *Labels and orders are filled with 100% accuracy. Takes initiative to fill medication orders and orders without first being asked. Qualifications:
• High School Diploma/GED is required.
• Must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician.
• Valid NYS Pharmacy Technician license and registration is required.
• Valid PCTB Certification is required.
• Knowledge or pharmaceuticals and inventory control practices and procedures.
• MS Windows environment or other business or pharmacy computer system literacy.
