staff handle legal matters from various areas of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO), including the Criminal, Energy & Environmental, Government, Health Care & Fair Competition, and Public Protection & Advocacy Bureaus. The WMAS Office also provides on-site assistance to residents with civil rights, consumer, and labor issues, and serves as a regional hub for the implementation of AGO-wide priorities that involve community outreach, education, and policy initiatives. The Assistant Attorney General position involves the investigation and prosecution of complex criminal cases within the jurisdiction of Western Massachusetts. The qualified attorney will have extensive prosecutorial experience to handle narcotics and firearms investigations and cases within the Enterprise & Major Crimes Division of the Criminal Bureau. The Criminal Bureau is staffed by a group of experienced prosecutors who partner with intelligence analysts, financial investigators, Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Attorney General’s Office, and local, state, and federal investigative and enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute large-scale narcotics trafficking organizations and firearms investigations throughout the Commonwealth. Primary Duties : The Assistant Attorney General will handle a large caseload of primarily narcotics and firearms-related matters from investigation through sentencing. The work involves extensive collaboration with law enforcement, grand jury investigations throughout the Commonwealth, complex motion practice, and frequent appearances before the Commonwealth’s District and Superior Courts for motions, pleas, and trials. Responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to:

• Leading investigations conducted with the assistance of Massachusetts State Police Troopers assigned to the Attorney General’s Office, as well as investigators from other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, such as the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration;
• Reviewing all search warrants sought in connection with these investigations, which include, but are not limited to, GPS tracking, “ping” and cell-site simulator, cell-site location information (CSLI), and wiretap warrants;
• Extensive grand jury practice, including, but not limited to, immunization of witnesses, working with civilian witnesses/victims, and working with victim witness advocates;
• Handling all phases of litigation for cases stemming from these investigations in Superior Court, including motions to suppress, trials, and related civil forfeiture claims. Position Requirements :
• Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar or be eligible for admission and obtain Massachusetts Bar admission within one year of the start date.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in state criminal practice, including grand jury investigations, motion practice, and trials.
• Ability to handle a large and advanced caseload and with substantial Superior Court experience.
• A background in handling narcotics and firearm related investigations and prosecution is preferred, with extensive experience and knowledge in reviewing search warrants and wiretap warrants.
• A demonstrated history of successful partnerships with law enforcement agencies.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Effective analytical, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Self-motivated, disciplined, and ethical, with the ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making.
• A valid Massachusetts driver’s license is required, and ability to travel anywhere in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to support investigations and litigation. Applicants must be Massachusetts Bar eligible at the time of application and must apply for admission before their start date. Candidates who are not yet admitted may be hired as ‘Counsel’ and must pass the Massachusetts Bar within one year of their start date. Location : The Assistant Attorney General hired for this position would be able to work out of the Western Massachusetts Regional Office in Springfield. Our hybrid model may include some telework days for the successful candidate. For the first six months in the position, the Assistant Attorney General will be expected to work in office at least three or four days per week.
