About Pomona
COLLEGE: Pomona College, established in 1887, is the founding college of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate institutions and two graduate institutions in Claremont, CA, on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. Pomona College has a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum spanning the arts, humanities, social sciences, math and sciences, emphasizing critical thinking and high-impact practices. Pitzer College, established in 1963, was founded as an innovative liberal arts institution, initially specializing in social and behavioral sciences, but has since expanded to other fields. Pitzer’s academic programs emphasize social justice, intercultural understanding, and environmental sensitivity. The 21 varsity Pomona-Pitzer Athletic teams comprise of students from both colleges, and compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the NCAA Division III. The Colleges have a combined enrollment of 2,600 students. JOB PURPOSE: Reporting to the Head Football Coach and Director of Athletics, the responsibilities for this role include assisting in all aspects of program operations. This includes organizing and implementing practice plans, providing instruction, and developing strategies and tactical plans for competition days. The role also involves evaluating and recruiting prospective student-athletes, scouting opponents and preparing detailed reports, and supporting the execution of sports camps and clinics. Additional responsibilities include maintaining effective communication with players, overseeing team equipment, and assisting with the management of the program’s social media presence. The Assistant Coach should be familiar with, and work to remain compliant with, college, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), and
Ncaa Diii
rules and procedures. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience of working with students from diverse backgrounds. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, the Assistant Coach position will provide opportunities and responsibilities in the areas of athletic performance that include, but are not limited to:
- Support the development and performance of the program’s special teams units.
- Coaching kickers, long snappers, and other relevant specialists.
- Attend Thursday practices and Saturday game days.
- Evaluate practice and game film footage.
- Provide position-specific instruction and feedback.
- Assist with special teams’ preparation and strategy.
- Serve as an asset in identifying and recruiting prospective student-athletes.
Additional Department Duties and
OPPORTUNITIES:
- Organization and implementation of practice plans and instruction.
- Serve as home contest manager, working alongside the Assistant Director for Operations and Events.
- Opportunities to work alongside athletics communications.
- Assist with club sports.
- Assist with oversight of the Athletic Performance Center.
- Assist with the Center for Athletics, Recreation, and Wellness.
- Serve on department committees. QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience required.
- Licenses/Certificates: A valid driver’s license is required or an equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site games, meetings, and events.
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience as a coach at the collegiate or professional level of athletics. Collegiate playing and/or coaching experience preferred. Experience in the recruitment of academically focused scholar-athletes is preferred. Capacity to positively interact with and support a culturally, ethnically, economically, and socially diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
Required Knowledge and Critical
SKILLS: ● Strong administrative, interpersonal skills, and computer/technology skills. ● Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, or willingness to complete certifications upon hire if working independently with student-athletes. ● Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software (such as Internet research and menu-driven databases). Demonstrate understanding of the use of equipment in assessing and improving department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality. ● Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of duties. ● Use strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and keen attention to detail. REQUIRED HOURS: This part-time position's hours are 15-20 hours per week, depending on the competitive season. Must be available for extensive weekend and evening hours during the season. Travel may be required. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.
Additional Position
DETAILS: This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefit-eligible position. The hourly rate for this role is $16.90 per hour. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to, education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior role.
