Role: Engineering Technician II Department: Engineering Reports To: Director of Hardware Engineering Compensation Ra nge: $35.00 - $55.00 per hour Non-Exempt About Us Headquartered in Berkeley, CA, Bellwether Coffee is working to positively transform the coffee industry by making coffee roasting more accessible and sustainable. About this Role This role will report to the Director of Hardware Engineering and be responsible for hands-on support of electro-mechanical assembly, integration, and troubleshooting in both production and R&D environments. This position is ideal for motivated candidates with strong mechanical and electrical skills who are eager to develop their skills. Comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided. Other responsibilities will include documentation and quality control, R&D prototype support, and production floor operations. This role will collaborate with senior Engineering Technicians, Mechanical Engineers, and the broader Operations and Engineering teams. Job Location The role requires on-site presence at Bellwether’s Berkeley HQ. Primary Responsibilities
- Assemble mechanical sub-assemblies and finished units following engineering drawings, BOMs, and written work instructions.
- Route, terminate, and inspect wiring harnesses and electrical connections in accordance with assembly documentation.
- Lead integration of electrical components (motors, sensors, actuators, PCBs) into mechanical structures.
- Perform functional checkout and basic verification testing of completed assemblies.
- Diagnose mechanical failures including misalignment, fastener issues, wear, and tolerance stack-up problems.
- Test equipment – power supplies, oscilloscopes, multimeters, continuity testers – to identify wiring faults, open circuits, and component failures.
- Perform assembly, rework, and test operations on the production floor to meet build schedules.
- Assist engineers with fabrication, assembly, and testing of prototype and pre-production units.
- Record assembly data, test results, and observations accurately in traveler documents and work logs.
- Flag non-conformances and assist with disposition of discrepant parts or assemblies. Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, or technical environment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude through work experience, coursework, personal projects, or vocational training.
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree, vocational/technical certification, or coursework in a related field is a plus.
- Skilled at reading and interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and assembly instructions.
- Familiarity with common hand tools, torque wrenches, calipers, and assembly fixtures.
- Strong electrical understanding: knowledge of voltage, current, continuity, circuit concepts.
- Ability to use a digital multimeter and follow wiring diagrams, electrical schematics & harness drawings.
- Experience working with electro-mechanical systems, robotics, automation, or similar technologies.
