Job Description ***Fall Semester*** Indian River State College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor I – Philosophy . We are seeking a passionate and dynamic educator with any Area of Specialization within the Philosophy discipline (AOS: Open) dedicated to inspiring learners through engaging and effective classroom instruction. The successful candidate will: · Contribute to the department’s philosophy curriculum with engaging and exploratory instruction. · Demonstrate a strong foundation in logic and critical thinking, with preference given to those who bring an interdisciplinary approach to teaching. · Foster an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that reflects the diversity of our student body. · Collaborate with fellow Faculty to enhance student success and strengthen the academic community. Knowledge and Skill

REQUIREMENTS: The minimum qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:

  • A Master's degree in Philosophy (or a Master’s degree and a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in Philosophy) from an accredited institution;
  • Proven knowledge of and experience in teaching Philosophy at the undergraduate level;
  • Ability to recognize and respond to the individual differences of students from a culturally diverse student population;
  • Willingness to make students active partners in the teaching/learning process;
  • Computer literacy and experience using computers in the classroom;
  • Willingness to apply technology and innovative approaches to the teaching of Philosophy; The following is preferred:
  • Two to five years of teaching experience in a college or post-secondary institution;
  • Research and publication useful to classroom instruction.
  • A Ph.D. in philosophy

Essential Job Functions and

RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential job functions and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Duties and responsibilities associated with teaching a minimum of 36 semester hours annually, including:
  • Developing a syllabus and schedule for each course;
  • Preparing, instructing, and grading all coursework in a timely manner;
  • Assigning final grades;
  • Holding regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
  • Maintaining course content in the College’s learning management system;
  • Teaching courses as assigned, with times and campus assignments that may change according to the needs of the department and the College;
  • Using data and assessment tools as well as computer software and technology-based applications in the evaluation and improvement of instruction;
  • Implementing strategies to improve student learning, retention, and completion;
  • Working collaboratively to improve student outcomes through course development, learning assessment, and curriculum revision;
  • Serving the college community through active participation in faculty committees and/or student clubs;
  • Completing other duties and responsibilities as defined by the faculty contract and assigned by the college administration. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires an ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present verbal lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary.
