LOCATION This position is fully on-site and requires a regular presence in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Remote or hybrid work is not available for this position.

Job Summary

The Assistant/Associate Professor of Physiology will contribute to the development, delivery, assessment, and continuous improvement of an integrated osteopathic medical curriculum focused on clinically relevant, system-based physiological mechanisms of health and disease. The successful candidate will have expertise in cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology and will serve as a primary content expert in these areas within the preclinical and master’s curriculum. Faculty duties also include engagement in scholarly activities, educational innovation, and institutional, community, and professional service.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Collaborate effectively with physiology faculty, biomedical scientists, clinicians, and curriculum leaders to support the delivery of integrated medical education.
• Serve as a primary content expert for cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology and contribute to the design, delivery, assessment, and continuous improvement of related curricular content.
• Develop instructional materials, learning activities, laboratory experiences, and assessment tools that align with established course goals, learning outcomes, and curricular standards.
• Work collaboratively with faculty colleagues to ensure consistency, continuity, integration, and appropriate sequencing of physiology content throughout the curriculum.
• Participate in curriculum review, assessment, and continuous quality improvement activities in a collegial and professional manner that supports departmental objectives and institutional priorities.
• Supervise, mentor, advise, and engage osteopathic medical students in a variety of educational settings and learning activities.
• Function as a faculty member of ARCOM through contributions to teaching, scholarship, service, and, when applicable, clinical practice.
• Participate in the implementation, assessment, maintenance, and continuous improvement of educational programs under the direction of departmental and curricular leadership.
• Engage in scholarly and professional activities consistent with institutional expectations and supportive of continued professional growth and educational excellence.
• Maintain an ongoing portfolio documenting teaching effectiveness, professional development, service contributions, and scholarly activities.
• Maintain membership and good standing in appropriate professional organizations and scientific societies related to physiology, medical education, and the faculty member's primary discipline.
• Contribute to departmental, college, and university committees and service initiatives as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Chair of Pathology, Pharmacology & Physiology or their designee. Requirements

Qualifications and Credentials

Education and Experience Minimum Qualifications

• Terminal degree (PhD, DO, MD, or equivalent) in Physiology or a closely related biomedical discipline.
• Demonstrated expertise in cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology.
• Experience teaching physiology, pathophysiology, or related biomedical sciences at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional level.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively within a collaborative academic environment.
• For Associate Professor, three years (3) academic experience as a full-time faculty member at a College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Allopathic Medicine, College of Health or Allied Sciences. Preferred Qualifications
• Experience teaching in an osteopathic or allopathic medical curriculum.
• Experience serving as a course director, course coordinator, or content lead in physiology or related disciplines.
• Experience in the development, implementation, and assessment of curricula in physiology, pathophysiology, or related biomedical sciences.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching medical, graduate, or allied health students.
• Experience with active learning methodologies, including team-based learning, case-based learning, and flipped-classroom instruction.
• Experience in multidisciplinary teaching and curricular integration across basic and clinical sciences.
• Record of scholarly activity in physiology, medical education, or a related field.
• Demonstrated commitment to faculty development, mentorship, and academic service. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
