Job Description The music program in Miami University’s College of Creative Arts invites applications for a full-time Assistant Lecturer/Assistant Teaching Professor to also serve as Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Director of Bands , beginning Fall 2027. This is a Teaching, Clinical Professor, or Lecturer (TCPL) faculty position with primary responsibilities in conducting, teaching, student mentorship, recruitment, and service. The successful candidate will provide energetic artistic and organizational leadership for Miami University’s athletic bands, with particular responsibility for recruiting, retaining, and growing participation in the Marching Band and Pep Bands. The position also provides curricular flexibility for the successful candidate to contribute to areas that align with their expertise and the evolving needs of the Music program. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
• Provide artistic, educational, and administrative leadership for the Miami University Marching Band and Pep Bands .
• Develop and implement effective strategies to recruit, retain, and grow participation in Miami’s athletic band program , with particular attention to significantly expanding participation in the Pep Bands.
• Direct the Miami University Marching Band and Pep Bands .
• Conduct the Symphony Band or another appropriate concert ensemble as assigned.
• Teach undergraduate courses consistent with the candidate’s expertise and the curricular needs of the Music program.
• Contribute to one or more curricular areas that may include music education, instrumental music, music production, music business, music technology, conducting, or other areas appropriate to the candidate’s background.
• Mentor students and contribute to their artistic, professional, and academic development.
• Build productive relationships with high school band directors, music educators, prospective students, alumni, and other constituencies important to the recruitment and visibility of Miami’s band program.
• Collaborate with Admissions, Enrollment Management, Athletics, Advancement, and other University partners as appropriate to strengthen recruitment, participation, visibility, and engagement in the athletic bands.
• Participate in program, College, and University service appropriate to a TCPL faculty appointment.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff in advancing the artistic and educational mission of the band and Music programs.
• Contribute to the continued development of the Music program and participate in collaborative initiatives associated with the formation of a new academic unit bringing together Music, Theatre, Dance, and Entertainment Design and Technology.
• Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications For appointment as Assistant Lecturer , candidates must have:
• A master’s degree in music or an appropriate related field by the date of appointment.
• Demonstrated experience conducting and leading instrumental ensembles.
• Demonstrated ability to provide artistic and organizational leadership for a collegiate marching band, athletic band, or comparable large ensemble program.
• Evidence of the ability to recruit, mentor, and retain students.
• Demonstrated expertise appropriate to teaching at the undergraduate level in one or more areas relevant to the Music program.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a Division 1 athletic bands program. For appointment as Assistant Teaching Professor , candidates must have:
• A DMA, Ph.D., or other appropriate terminal degree in music or a related field by the date of appointment.
• Demonstrated experience conducting and leading instrumental ensembles.
• Demonstrated ability to provide artistic and organizational leadership for a collegiate marching band, athletic band, or comparable large ensemble program.
• Evidence of the ability to recruit, mentor, and retain students.
• Demonstrated expertise appropriate to teaching at the undergraduate level in one or more areas relevant to the Music program.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a Division 1 athletic bands program. Consideration may be given to candidates with:
• A record of excellence in conducting and leading collegiate or secondary school marching and athletic bands.
• Demonstrated success recruiting, retaining, and growing participation in marching bands, pep bands, or other large student ensembles.
• Evidence of creative and effective approaches to student recruitment and engagement.
• Successful leadership of highly visible athletic band programs that contribute meaningfully to campus culture and community.
• Experience developing productive relationships with secondary school band directors and prospective students.
• Excellence in undergraduate teaching and student mentorship.
• Expertise in music education, music production, music business, music technology, conducting, or another curricular area that complements the needs and future direction of the Music program.
• Experience working collaboratively with athletics, admissions, advancement, alumni, or other institutional partners.
• Experience with contemporary marching arts, which may include arranging, program design, visual design, technology, sound reinforcement, electronics, or multimedia production.
• Strong organizational, administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• An ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
• Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration across music, theatre, dance, entertainment design and technology, and other areas of the performing arts. This position will begin work in July to prepare for marching band season, with auditions occurring over the summer and band camp beginning the week before the start of fall semester. Summer work will be paid separately under a contract separate from the academic year faculty contract. About Music at Miami University Miami University’s Music program provides professional and pre-professional musical training within the context of a broad liberal arts education. Undergraduate study currently includes the Bachelor of Music with concentrations in Music Education and Music Performance and the Bachelor of Arts in Music with tracks in Music Production and Music Business, as well as minors in Music Performance, Music Composition, and Music Theatre.
