Job Posting Title: Adjunct Faculty, Biotechnology-Based Therapeutics, Henry E. Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences Job Description: Position Overview: The primary responsibility of the Adjunct Faculty member is teaching. We are seeking adjunct instructors to teach the following course at Keck Graduate Institute (KGI): SCI 6310 Biotechnology-Based Therapeutics (Spring semester, 3 credits) Course Description Advances in genomics, proteomics, recombinant protein technology and structural biology have created opportunities and challenges for the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. This course will provide students with a background of the scientific basis of some key aspects of biotechnology-based drugs that involves design, discovery and development process. Students will learn about therapeutic and vaccine targets, and how the drugs and vaccines are designed, tested and produced. They will also learn about recently developed biological pharmaceuticals along with many of the current targets of pharmaceutical companies. The mechanism of many of the current biotechnology-based therapeutics will be discussed. A group project will be required in which each group will provide a short business plan for the development of a new biologic drug. This course will consist of lectures, seminars, student presentations and group discussions. Environmental, ethical, regulatory, patent, economic and social issues related to biotechnology-based therapeutics will also be discussed. The successful candidate must share in the mission of KGI and the Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences Programs. The Adjunct Faculty member reports directly to the Dean of the Riggs School and works collaboratively with the Program Directors and other faculty. Education and Experience: A minimum of a Master’s degree in a related field. A doctoral degree is strongly preferred. Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience. Prior experience in teaching for active learning preferred. Experience with the Canvas learning management system is a plus. Hours, Classification, and Status: This is a part-time, exempt, adjunct faculty position and is not eligible for benefits. Schedules will vary depending on course assignments and the needs of the department or the Institute. The base salary range for this position is $2,500 - $15,000 per semester, depending on credits per course. Physical and Mental Requirements Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to detail with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages. Ability to travel locally, depending on business needs.
