For more information, please visit This is a tenure-track, nine-month Assistant Professor of Petroleum Engineering position. A reduced teaching load supports research development. Primary duties will include establishing an independent, externally funded research program in drilling engineering; contributing to the BS in Petroleum Engineering with primary responsibility for teaching drilling engineering courses and associated laboratories; and mentoring student research and senior design projects. Duties also include teaching other Petroleum Engineering and engineering courses as needed; supporting recruitment, accreditation, and School service; and collaborating with academic, industry, and government partners. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace. The School of Engineering offers ABET-accredited programs in Systems, Computer, and Petroleum Engineering. Its BS in Computer Science and MS in Systems Engineering launched in 2026, and its BS in Civil Engineering launches in 2027. This position will expand Petroleum Engineering faculty capacity to meet significant enrollment growth. This position is part of a strategic faculty expansion in the School of Engineering to hire 10 permanent faculty members, eight tenure-track and two instructional, beginning Fall 2027. Required Qualifications The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date. Applicants nearing completion may be considered if the degree is awarded before appointment. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in drilling engineering through research, scholarship, professional experience, or a combination thereof; be able to teach drilling engineering courses and associated laboratories, including the use of drilling simulation equipment; mentor student research; and establish an independent research program in this area. Candidates must demonstrate strength in one or more drilling areas: fluids and cementing; well planning, design, and control; managed-pressure or underbalanced drilling; well integrity and lost-circulation control; drilling optimization; or drilling and well construction for geothermal, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), hydrogen storage, or other emerging subsurface-energy applications. Experience or demonstrated ability to pursue external research funding is especially desirable. Experience or ability to develop industry and government partnerships is also desirable.
