Nurse - Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) Night Shift

Summary The Dayton, Ohio VA Medical Center is looking for a RN, Nurse Officer of the Day (NOD), Night Shift. Duties Duties include but are not limited to: The NOD directs position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to the management of complex patient care. Assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for managing and directing employees, staffing units, and allocating resources as necessary during weekends, holidays, and after-hours tours during the absence of nursing management/leadership. Collaborates with the Administrative Officer of the Day (AOD) and other members of the interdisciplinary team as needed for decisions related to on-going patient care and actions taken in emergency situations and disasters. Provides programmatic outcomes to nursing leadership to assist with improving organizational processes and the delivery of patient care. Demonstrates the ability to plan and organize the delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning. The NOD is skilled in the delivery of patient care and serves as the facility nursing expert at all hours to support, provide and facilitate emergency medical support throughout the facility. Serves as the facility expert for all patient care areas in identifying escalating medical crises, environmental factors, and in allocating staffing resources appropriately throughout the facility to meet the care needs of Veterans. The NOD uses clinical knowledge and judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes. Functions proficiently in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities. Evaluates current practice and formulates outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise. Guides, develops, and supports staff from a leadership perspective using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/of service activities. Demonstrates advanced leadership at the systems level that is sustainable, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex situations. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.) Reference: For more information on this qualification standard, please visit Preferred Experience: Previous Critical Care Nursing Experience Previous Supervisory Experience Accreditation and Survey Readiness Expertise- Experience with accreditation processes for organizations such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), Office of Inspector General (OIG), and/or other regulatory survey teams. Program Evaluation and Analysis- Skill in program or chart review, data analysis, measurement of clinical outcomes, and reporting performance metrics Interdisciplinary Collaboration- Ability to work collaboratively across multiple disciplines and services, including educating staff and facilitating meetings or trainings. Computer/EHR/Reporting Skills- Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and data/reporting systems. Physical Requirements: This clinical position includes a level of physicality normally associated with inpatient care, including bending, grasping, kneeling, performing moderate lifting, carrying tasks of up to 35 pounds per Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) guidelines and using an appropriate mechanical lift. Candidates must possess the ability to pivot their waste and neck, push pull items not greater than 35 pounds and reach within a five-foot distance or above shoulder height. The position requires sitting, squatting, standing, walking and twisting, alongside wrist flexion and extension. Employees are expected to employ proper body mechanics during lifting Requires adequate vision to accurately perform assigned duties, distinguish basic colors and assess patients and the environment safely. The position requires the ability to hear at a level to perform the assigned duties, and the use of hearing aids are permitted
