Instructor (Chemistry Laboratory) - EXCEPTED SERVICE

Summary This position is at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Maritime Administration (MARAD) serves as Chemistry Laboratory Manager in the Department of Mathematics and Science. Duties As a Instructor (Chemistry Laboratory), you will: Present relevant chemistry concepts in the pre-lab lecture, checking of students' execution of experiments, preliminary evaluation of students' experimental data and grading lab reports submitted by students. Serve as the Property Custodian for the Department and is required to keep an up-to-date inventory of equipment, supplies, spare parts, and maintenance needs for chemistry and physics. Be responsible for the reliability, the precise calibration, and the technical operations of all equipment used in the physics and chemistry laboratories and in demonstrations that require periodic testing and calibration. The ideal candidate for this position is a hands-on technical professional who combines expertise in laboratory operations with strong instructional skills to support the Department of Mathematics and Science at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Qualifications To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must (1) meet the Education Requirement for the series, (2) provide a copy of transcripts for verification, AND (3) meet either the education or experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration. To qualify for the GS-00 (Instructor (Chemistry Laboratory) you: Must possess a minimum of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry or a closely related chemistry field including, but not limited to, Chemistry or Biochemistry. Must possess a minimum of one year full-time experience tutoring for or teaching freshman-level Chemistry courses in a college or university, other than as a part of teaching assistantship. Education Individual Occupational Requirements Basic Requirements: Degree: Physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
