Job Description – Shift Engineer / Shift Supervisor Department: Engineering / Facilities Management Designation: Shift Engineer / Shift Supervisor Location: Hospital Facility Reporting To: Assistant Manager / Manager – Engineering 1. Job Purpose To ensure smooth, safe, and uninterrupted operation of all hospital engineering services during the assigned shift, with particular focus on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, BMS, medical-support utilities, and other critical facility systems. 2. Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and operate all engineering systems during the assigned shift.
- Ensure uninterrupted operation of critical areas such as OT, ICU, MRI, CT, PET-CT, LINAC, dialysis, radiology, and other clinical areas .
- Monitor HVAC systems including AHUs, FCUs, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, VRF/VRV systems, and ventilation systems.
- Monitor electrical systems including HT/LT panels, DG sets, UPS, batteries, transformers, APFC panels, and essential/emergency power systems.
- Monitor BMS alarms, parameters, trends, and equipment status and take immediate action on abnormalities.
- Attend breakdowns and complaints promptly and coordinate with technicians and specialized vendors whenever required.
- Ensure preventive maintenance activities are carried out as per the approved schedule.
- Maintain proper shift handover and takeover records, including equipment status, pending complaints, breakdowns, and critical observations.
- Monitor energy and utility parameters and report any abnormal consumption or equipment performance.
- Ensure availability and proper functioning of firefighting, plumbing, pumps, STP, water systems, and other facility utilities.
- Coordinate with clinical, housekeeping, security, and other departments for engineering-related requirements.
- Ensure compliance with hospital safety procedures, SOPs, statutory requirements, and engineering standards.
- Supervise technicians, allocate daily jobs, monitor attendance, and ensure effective utilization of manpower.
- Verify completion and quality of maintenance work carried out by technicians and vendors.
- Maintain shift logbooks, equipment readings, breakdown reports, checklists, and other required records.
- Escalate critical equipment failures, safety concerns, and major breakdowns immediately to the reporting manager.
- Ensure proper housekeeping and safety practices in plant rooms and engineering areas.
- Support emergency response during power failure, HVAC failure, water leakage, fire incidents, flooding, and other facility emergencies. 3. Critical Equipment Monitoring The Shift Engineer/Supervisor shall have working knowledge of and monitor, as applicable:
- Chillers and cooling towers
- AHUs, FCUs and ventilation systems
- VRF/VRV systems
- HT/LT electrical systems
- DG sets and AMF/ATS panels
- UPS and battery systems
- BMS
- Medical and critical-area HVAC systems
- Pumps and water systems
- STP/WTP systems
- Fire alarm and firefighting systems
- Boilers and hot-water systems
- Compressed air and other utility systems 4. Shift Management
- Conduct proper shift handover and takeover.
- Review all pending complaints and breakdowns at the beginning of the shift.
- Prioritize critical-area complaints and attend them immediately.
- Ensure adequate manpower deployment during the shift.
- Monitor technician performance and work progress.
- Maintain complete and accurate shift documentation.
- Ensure no critical complaint remains unattended or unreported. 5. Qualification & Experience Education:
- Diploma / ITI in Electrical, Mechanical, HVAC, or relevant engineering trade.
- Diploma/B.Tech in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering may be preferred for the Shift Engineer position. Experience:
- Shift Engineer: 5–8 years of relevant facility/hospital/industrial maintenance experience.
- Shift Supervisor: 3–6 years of relevant experience.
- Hospital or critical-facility experience will be preferred. 6. Technical Skills
- Good understanding of HVAC and electrical systems.
- Basic knowledge of BMS operation and alarm monitoring.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment breakdowns.
- Knowledge of preventive and breakdown maintenance.
- Understanding of electrical and mechanical safety practices.
- Ability to read equipment manuals, drawings, and basic technical documents.
- Basic computer and reporting skills. 7. Key Competencies
