Summary This position is part of the Office of Science

  • Headquarters, Department of Energy. As a Geosciences Program Manager, you will manage fundamental geosciences and physical science research programs to support national energy goals and oversee program operations, monitor project performance, and manage program budgets. Duties The Basic Energy Sciences (BES) program supports fundamental research to understand, predict, and ultimately control matter and energy at the electronic, atomic, and molecular levels, generating knowledge that can lay the foundations for new energy technologies and advance DOE missions in energy, environment, and national security. BES research emphasizes discovery, design, and understanding of new materials and new chemical, biochemical, and geological processes. Veterans shape the future of energy As a Physical Scientist/Geosciences Program Manager, you will: Formulate long-range scientific program goals and research roadmaps in basic geosciences or related physical science fields. Deliver authoritative scientific advice to senior leadership on geosciences developments and policies. Monitor scientific project execution across the agency complex to ensure goals and technical requirements are met. Modify and justify organizational budget submissions to align financial resources with scientific priorities. Organize independent merit reviews and calls for proposals to select high-impact research projects. Represent the agency on interagency and technical committees to build partnerships with external scientific organizations. BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-13 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 3 of 4 of the following: Directing the program planning and implementation for a major scientific research segment in fundamental geosciences or related physical science fields. Developing operating plans, work schedules, and project budgets for assigned scientific research initiatives. Evaluating technical research proposals or participating in peer-review processes to recommend project funding. Presenting scientific findings or program updates at technical conferences, workshops, or inter-organizational meetings to foster research collaboration. GS-15 Specialized Experience Statement:

REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 3 of 4 of the following: Formulating long-range scientific program goals and research roadmaps in fundamental geosciences or related physical science fields. Evaluating fundamental geosciences research to provide authoritative scientific recommendations to executive decision-makers. Monitoring and guiding the execution of fundamental science projects to evaluate technical progress against established performance markers and schedules. Leading working groups across external organizations, industry, or academic institutions to build strategic research partnerships. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
