Job Description The Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Basque Studies, open rank (Assistant (II), Associate (III), or Full (IV) Professor), to begin July 1, 2027. The field of specialization is open. We welcome applications from scholars in any humanities, arts, or social science discipline whose research and teaching engage the Basque Country, its languages and cultures, or the global Basque diaspora. The successful candidate will hold a tenure home in a College of Liberal Arts department appropriate to their discipline including Anthropology; Art, Art History and Design; Communication Studies; English; History; Music, Philosophy; Political Science; Sociology and Cultural Analysis; Theatre and Dance; or World Languages and Literatures. The candidate will also contribute to the interdisciplinary research, teaching, and public-facing mission of the Center for Basque Studies, including its Ph.D. program in Basque Studies. Basque Studies at Nevada is broadly interdisciplinary, spanning history, anthropology, literature, linguistics, political science, geography, art, sociology, and cultural analysis. We are especially interested in candidates whose scholarship builds bridges across fields and speaks to national and international audiences. The faculty member who joins the Center can expect to teach and mentor students in the Ph.D. in Basque Studies and in their home department’s undergraduate and graduate programs. The standard teaching load is 2-2, with substantial involvement in graduate education, including graduate-level teaching, student mentoring and advising, and service as chair or member of graduate committees. Faculty affiliated with Basque Studies contribute to Center for Basque Studies conferences and publications, participate in its full range of public outreach and programming, and should expect to perform service and administrative roles appropriate to the stage of their career development. The rank and tenure status of the appointment will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s record and qualifications. • A Ph.D. in a relevant humanities or social science discipline or a similar terminal degree in the Arts. For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, the degree must be completed no later than July 1, 2027. Candidates for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor must hold the Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in the discipline and present a record of scholarship, teaching, and service commensurate with tenure at that rank.
• An active and promising research agenda that engages Basque Studies—the language, cultures, history, society, arts, or diaspora of the Basque people—broadly conceived.
• Qualifications sufficient to hold a tenure home in an appropriate department within the College of Liberal Arts.
• Demonstrated excellence, or clear promise of excellence, in teaching, research, and service.
• Reading, writing, or speaking knowledge of Euskara and/or Spanish or French. Preferred Qualifications
• A record of, or clear potential for, interdisciplinary and international scholarly collaboration.
• Experience with, or commitment to, graduate mentoring and doctoral education.
• A record of securing, or strong potential to secure, external research funding.
• Experience engaging public, community, or diaspora audiences.
• Scholarly strengths that complement and extend existing expertise at the Center and across the College of Liberal Arts—for example, in comparative and transnational approaches applied to a range of disciplines, linguistics, digital or public humanities, environmental arts and humanities, cinema and media studies, gender and sexuality studies, migration and diaspora studies. Compensation Compensation is competitive and commensurate with rank, education, and experience, consistent with the appropriate faculty compensation grade within the Nevada System of Higher Education. This is a 9-month, “B” contract appointment.
