About the Position: This Driver License Examiner work involves the administration of examinations to applicants for Class A, B, C, motorcycle, and school bus driver licenses. Responsibilities include administering road skill, written/oral tests, vision screening, and road evaluations to those deemed to have medical conditions requiring further review. Work activity may be performed outside in all types of weather, including inclement rain/snow conditions or excessive heat. Work is performed under limited supervision. What We’re Looking For:

- Conducts pre-trip vehicle evaluations and administers driving skills tests.
- Administers and scores road skills tests for Class A, B, and C vehicles, motorcycles, and school buses, as well as special examinations for physically challenged and/or adverse driving applicants.
- Administers and scores written and oral examinations on traffic laws and explains test results, as necessary, to determine an applicant’s knowledge of traffic and safety rules.
- Administers vision screening examinations to determine an applicant’s visual acuity for issuance of an operator’s license or permit.
- Operates digital photo licensing equipment to issue driver’s licenses and state identification cards.
- Applies and explains applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to individuals applying for licensure.
- Operates electronic tablets and desktop software used to administer, score, and record examination results.
- Answers inquiries from the public and provide accurate information to applicants regarding driver licensing requirements and procedures.
- Cleans, services, restocks, and maintains testing equipment, forms, supply kits, vehicles, and other issued materials to ensure they are in good operating condition and available for use.
- Investigates adverse reports regarding an individual’s ability to drive and administers related driving skills tests to help safeguard the public. Preference will be given to candidates who bring digital fluency and a process-improvement mindset: Comfort learning and adopting new technologies, experience streamlining or digitizing paper-based work, clear written communication, curiosity about emerging workplace tools, and the judgment to evaluate and verify their output before relying on it. Preferred qualification would include successful completion of Maine BMV’s examiner training, possession of a valid International Driver Examiner Certification (IDEC) and/or Certified Commercial Knowledge Examiner (CCKE) certification.
- Prior experience as a certified Driver License Examiner in Maine.
- Experience developing and delivering structured programming.
- Familiarity with administering written exams in multiple languages
- Strong knowledge of Title 29A and examiner policies and procedures.
- Experience developing training materials, procedural manuals, or instructional programs.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience working with scheduling systems, spreadsheets, databases, and reporting tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to provide clear procedural guidance and instruction.
- Experience reviewing invoices, billing documentation, or contract-related records for accuracy and compliance.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining effective collaboration with statewide staff and external vendors.
- Demonstrated ability to provide professional customer service in challenging or high-volume environments.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing operational demands and statewide staffing needs.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
- Ability to travel statewide and maintain a flexible work schedule when operationally necessary.
- Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license in any class.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license in good standing.
- Required to live within 35 air miles of the requested location.
Minimum Qualifications
