Job Description The University of Nevada, Reno Extension invites applications for a Community Based Instructor 3 to support the Lyon County 4-H Youth Development Program. This position offers an opportunity to help young people build confidence, leadership skills and meaningful connections through engaging, research-based educational experiences. This position is based in the Lyon County Extension Office in Yerington, NV, and is an in-person position. Working collaboratively with Extension faculty and staff, community partners and volunteers, the successful candidate will assist with planning, delivering and evaluating 4-H programming for youth in traditional and nontraditional settings throughout Lyon County. Programs may be offered through 4-H clubs, schools, after-school programs, community events and other educational settings. What You’ll Do The Community Based Instructor 3 will play an important role in expanding educational opportunities for Lyon County youth. Primary responsibilities include:
- Assist with the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Lyon County 4-H Youth Development Program.
- Develop written program plans and deliver educational programming to 4-H club members, after-school and in-school participants, volunteer leaders and other audiences.
- Teach directly and coordinate guest presenters and educators using appropriate research-based curricula.
- Recruit, screen, train, support and evaluate adult and teen volunteers.
- Assign and review volunteer work and meet regularly with volunteer leaders.
- Develop and implement strategies to recruit youth from a variety of communities and backgrounds.
- Collaborate with local, area, state and regional Extension personnel to accomplish program goals.
- Maintain accurate records for youth participants, volunteers, clubs, grants and educational programs.
- Collect program data and prepare required reports by established deadlines.
- Assist with the coordination and training of 4-H after-school program staff, as needed.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to strengthen program delivery and support organizational goals. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about positive youth development and enjoys building relationships with young people, families, volunteers, schools and community partners. They are organized, dependable and comfortable balancing program delivery, volunteer coordination and administrative responsibilities. This individual will demonstrate sound judgment when selecting curricula, developing lesson plans, collecting program data and responding to questions or challenges. They will also bring cultural awareness and the interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds. Essential Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three (3) years of relevant work experience in areas such as agriculture, horticulture, community development, health and nutrition, human and family development, and natural resources in urban and rural areas; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. This position requires candidates to complete a fingerprinting/background check. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with youth in educational, recreational or community-based programs.
- Experience recruiting, training, coordinating or supporting volunteers.
- Familiarity with 4-H or other positive youth development programs.
- Experience developing and delivering educational activities or lesson plans.
- Experience maintaining program records, collecting data and preparing reports.
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish. Schedule and Travel This position operates on a 40-hour flexible workweek and involves regular travel to schools, community sites, and program locations throughout Lyon County. The work schedule may vary to accommodate youth programming, volunteer trainings, community events, and other Extension activities, including occasional evening and weekend assignments. Mileage incurred while conducting university business is reimbursable in accordance with university policies. An Extension vehicle may also be available for work-related travel after the successful completion of required defensive driver training. Compensation Grade 27 (Entry, Step 01 $22.57/hr) In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets.
