LOCATION*** The major duties include but are not limited to: Performs regular and random health and welfare inspections of public areas and resident rooms to detect contraband and unsecured medication; Conducts daily resident room inspections and two-hour rounds of all public spaces: Performs inspections of patients' belongings at admission and upon return from pass; Conducts breathalyzers, collects specimens and ensures timely delivery to VA nursing; Ensures shift reports occur verbally and in writing; Provides administrative support including preparing program materials such as handbooks, orientation packets and discharge documents and processes residents for admission and clearance; Conducts weekly locker inspections and performs bed checks, Reports absences and conducts building and domiciliary searches for missing patients; Develops and maintains professional helping relationships with residents; Provides orientation, maintains contact to support behavior and adjustment, and assists residents with physical, mental, emotional or behavioral challenges; Identifies and resolves resident concerns or refers to appropriate staff; Provides crisis intervention during medical, psychiatric, or behavioral emergencies, assessing situations promptly and securing appropriate care; Coordinates, prioritizes and integrates their work while leading the work of Domiciliary Assistants. Leads the team and provides day-to-day (shift) work direction and oversees final work product for accuracy and completeness; Monitors and reports on the progress of the team's work and provides updates to the supervisor; Provides information to the supervisor relative to individual and team performance standards, ratings, promotions and awards; Resolves simple informal issues of team members and refers others to the supervisor; Oversees general administrative issues regarding subordinates' leave, scheduling appointments, etc.; Coordinates coverage for emergency leave (up to three days) and limited amounts of sick leave (for medical appointments) for team members and maintains the team leave calendar; Secures contraband in designated lockers and secures valuables of deceased, hospitalized, or irregularly discharged residents; and Performs other related duties as assigned. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ To qualify for this position at the GS-6 level, you must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience is experience that involved the observation of and assistance in the application of techniques relating to behavior, capacities, traits, interests, and activities of either humans or, under laboratory conditions, animals. Experience may have been gained in connection with a program of research or direct services in psychology that gave a practical understanding of some of the principles, methods, and techniques of psychology needed to assist professional psychologists. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~ Education: Successfully completed one half year of graduate education (9 semester hours or equivalent) with a major that included courses directly related to the work of this position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
