Maintenance Mechanic

Summary You will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic with US Fish and Wildlife Service, Big Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, with offices located in Hilo, Hawaii. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of construction, rehabilitation and maintenance work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 15 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate. Duties Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, and troubleshoots, new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment on a Service Land. Performs the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block, and stone. Operates various electric resistance welding machines such as spot, seam, and flash, or use a manual gas torch welding process. Operates a variety of types of heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel and earth while excavating, backfilling, grading, or leveling earth to specifications on such projects. Conducts maintenance on motor vehicles replace sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses, and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-10/08/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
